Fashion is finally facing the future. Spurred by consumer demand for something new, youth culture's obsession with cyberspace, and the realization by designers that the millennium is upon us, traditional looks inspired from the past are being replaced with fashion that makes a modern, high-tech statement. In apparel, this futuristic trend is welcoming synthetic fabrics in body-conscious, streamlined silhouettes and shiny, metallic, and even pearlized finishes. Eyewear, reflecting its role as a fashion accessory, is following suit. As frame designers look to the 21st Century, high-shining, minimalistic, on-the-edge styles are being introduced. They offer sleek, aerodynamic, iridescent, and modern looks that firmly move eyewear into the new century. Trends to watch for at the brink of the new millennium include lots of silver and iridescent or translucent finishes; rimless styles in a range of unique aerodynamic shapes; large sunglasses with shiny finishes and flash lenses; and technological advances in materials and hinge designs that add to a frame's minimalistic charm. On the following pages we highlight the latest in ophthalmic and sunwear styles that carry forward this futuristic trend. FB
