Sit through a quarter of a basketball game—and in roughly that length of time, a sports-related eye injury occurs in the United States. According to Prevent Blindness, an emergency room in the U.S. treats a sports-related eye injury every 13 minutes.
An overwhelming 13,000 sports-related eye injuries were sustained by kids ages 14 and under in the U.S. in 2015, as reported by Prevent Blindness. No doubt, most of those could have been prevented with proper eye protection.
And, ocular trauma can lead to lifelong vision problems, especially for kids, according to a recent study by JAMA Ophthalmology, which reveals that sports-related eye injuries disproportionately affect the young.
Not surprisingly, nearly 9 out of 10 parents of children participating in sports have concerns about risk of injury (87.9%), according to an espnW/Aspen Institute Project Play Survey of Parents on youth sports issues in 2014. In fact, parents were more concerned about injuries than any other issue, including the quality or behavior of coaches (81.5%), cost (70.3%), and the emphasis on winning over having fun (66.1%).
How can you assure parents—and ensure that your young and active patients protect their eyes while in the game? This much is simple: gear them up properly with protective sports eyewear.
Here, as a primer, we deliver an all-star roster of the newest children’s sports eyewear that delivers big on both style and protection.
