Shantell Martin lives in black and white. The British-born, NYC-based visual artist is known for her unique, continuous-line, stream-of-consciousness drawings that put simple black marker to clean white paper. Her drawings have transformed everything from walls and sneakers to cars and circuit boards.
Martin has also put her mark on eyewear via a collaboration with the Max Mara collection from Safilo—a limited-edition sunwear style debuted in May. The Prism in Motion project boasts 1,000 unique pieces crafted with a canvas Martin created. Here, EB catches up with Martin to get a quick picture of her world.
Your design aesthetic in 3 words?
Free, positive, and progressive.
What drives you to draw?
I love knowing that we can all draw, but to do it in a way that is confident and recognizable takes a ton of hard work, persistence, and self-knowing.
Fav eyewear-wearing icon?
Casey Neistat—one of the kindest, coolest people I know who does the kind of things that I would want to do in this lifetime… [Neistat is a YouTube personality and filmmaker with a penchant for eyewear. youtube.com/user/caseyneistat .]
