Hilary Halper stepped down from her position as co-CFO of EssilorLuxottica. As we go to print, the company is in the process of appointing Halper’s successor.
Richard J. Shuldiner, O.D., FAAO, has been named to the newly formed Eye Health Interest Group of the American Diabetes Association. Dr. Shuldiner serves as president of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists.
Hoya Vision Care appointed Eduardo Martins as U.S. president. Martins brings more than 25 years of sales and global management experience to the role and previously held senior positions with Essilor of America.
The International Sports Vision Association announced the appointment of Jennifer Stewart, O.D., to its Advisory Board. Dr. Stewart is a partner at Norwalk Eye Care and co-founder and chief optometric officer at Performance 20/20, a performance and sports vision practice.
Charissa Lee, O.D., FAAO, has been appointed head of North America professional affairs for Johnson & Johnson Vision. Dr. Lee has served as director of professional education for the company since 2014.
Maui Jim announced the promotions of Jay Black to chief sales and marketing officer, Julie Barton to senior director of marketing for the Americas, Diego de Castro to senior director of brand marketing and management, and Martijn van Eerde to senior director of marketing for Europe, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
Steve Berryman has been appointed president of Skygen USA. Berryman will be responsible for business growth, profitability, benefit administration, and execution of strategic initiatives. He will continue to serve as chief legal officer on an interim basis.
◄ VSP Global promoted Michelle Skinner to chief network officer and Earnie Franklin to chief operating officer. Skinner most recently served as chief provider relations officer and assumes responsibilities for network business areas. Franklin will be responsible for the organization’s supply chain, integration, and overseeing VSP Optics.
BUSINESS UPDATES
The European Commission has initiated a Phase II review of the proposed acquisition of GrandVision by EssilorLuxottica. The companies share an objective to close the transaction within 24 months. The transaction has been cleared in the U.S., Russia, and Colombia, and is under review in four more countries.
◄ Shamir Optical Industry has partnered with Paris Miki, Japan’s biggest optical chain. Shamir will be providing Paris Miki with InoTime, its proprietary lens production technology, through a Tokyo-based laboratory.

◄ Jim Mazzo, global president of ophthalmic devices for Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., will be honored with the 2020 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. The award recognizes immigrants and their outstanding professional, cultural, or civic commitment to the U.S. Mazzo shares this special recognition with past medalists including Nobel Prize winners.
L’Amy America was named one of the 2020 best places to work in Connecticut, according to a statewide survey.
