SILMO Paris has announced the sixth edition of its Optical Design Competition and invites design students worldwide to develop new concepts for eyewear as the international optical trade show prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2027. The competition's theme, "Reinventing the Codes," challenges participants to reconsider conventional approaches to eyewear design through innovative shapes, materials, manufacturing techniques, and the relationship between eyewear and the wearer.
Organizers have identified 3 areas of exploration to guide participants:
-
Freedom of form, which focuses on volumes, structures, and geometries
-
Materials as a means of expression, which encourages experimentation with textures, colors, materials, and manufacturing processes
-
Objects and emotion, which explores eyewear as an expression of identity and personality
Belgian designer Alain Gilles will serve as president of the competition jury, alongside professionals from the design and optical industries. Entries will be evaluated according to 4 criteria: innovation and design, use and function, responsible design, and technical feasibility. Up to 10 projects will be shortlisted, and prototypes will be produced and exhibited at SILMO Paris 2027. The exhibition will provide participating students with an opportunity to present their designs to optical industry professionals, media representatives, and international eyewear companies. The competition is open to students ages 18 and older who are enrolled in the third, fourth, or fifth year of a design program. Multidisciplinary teams may also participate, subject to competition requirements.
The winning project will be announced September 24, 2027, during SILMO Paris. The winner will receive a €10,000 prize, divided equally between the student and their educational institution.
The deadline for applications is June 16, 2027. Additional information and project submissions are available at concoursdesign.silmo.fr.
