VSP Ventures, in collaboration with the UC Berkeley Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science, has announced Sarah Huh as the recipient of the 2026 Dr. Craig Hisaka Memorial Scholarship.
The annual scholarship awards $2,500 to a UC Berkeley optometry student who has completed the VSP Business Management Immersion Program (BMIP). Recipients are selected based on a reflective essay describing their experience in the program and the lessons they gained from participation.
Huh, a member of the Class of 2028, was selected for her essay reflecting on the program’s impact on her professional development and career goals. “I’ve always been interested in private practice, but the VSP Business Management Immersion Program completely transformed how I see my future in the field,” said Huh. “The mentorship I gained was a turning point in my education, building both my confidence and my commitment to a career in optometry.”
The scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. Craig Hisaka, an optometrist known for his advocacy of private practice and mentorship of optometry students interested in practice ownership. Hisaka founded Brookside Optometric Group, which later became a VSP Ventures practice and was the first practice to participate in the BMIP.
According to VSP Ventures, the scholarship is intended to support future leaders in optometry and encourage student engagement with business and practice management education.
VSP Vision reported that it has awarded more than $4.3 million in scholarships to optometry students to date. Additional information about scholarship opportunities is available through the VSP Provider Hub.
