EDITOR'S LETTER
Then & Now
Stephanie K. De Long
Do
you remember 1986? What were you doing, and thinking, back then?
When Eyecare Business was launched, I was working in Manhattan as a business and consumer writer. A few months later, I caught the optical bug, and I've had it ever since. The photo at the top of this page ran with my first EB editorial in April 1991. Had it been from 1986, I would, of course, have looked much younger!
We asked the same of our Eyecare Business editors. Here's how they looked (from the top, Amy, Karlen, Lindsey, and Erinn), and what they were thinking, back then.
Amy Spiezio, managing editor: "That year, my mind was more on my first gala eventmy sweet 16 party (shown celebrating with my brother, Alex)than on the future. Actually, even then I wanted to be a writer, and thought I would be penning comedies for the New York stage. I still love to indulge my love for drama, but now it tends to be at photoshoots and planning meetings!"
Karlen McLean, senior editor: "I was working as a dispenser and contact lens tech at Au Courant Opticians in Ann Arbor, Mich. Later that year, I transferred to their Florida stores. In 1986, I never thought I'd be writing about optical, but I did already know I was an industry lifer."
Lindsey Aspinall, senior associate editor: "I was four
years old and my thoughts revolved around things like "Sesame Street" or the newest
toys. My mom, did, however, have inkling I'd somehow be involved with writingI'd
dictate ideas and stories and ask her to record them."
Erinn Morgan, fashion & market editor: "I was in my
first year at Philadelphia College of Textiles & Science, earning a degree in
fashion merchandising with a literature minor. With a budding interest in
journalism, I knew I wanted to write about style and the business of fashion."
We all thank you for spending these last 20 years with us. And, we wish you the best for 20 more.
P.S. Our celebration is bittersweet because we lost our company's founder, Bob Boucher, last month. We'll miss Bob's dynamic presence, quick wit, and unique way of making everyone feel special.
