On page 48 of EB's November 2011 issue, the attributes of Nylon should have been listed as:
NYLON
WHAT IT IS: Originally discovered in the mid-1930s by a chemist for DuPont, nylon was first used as a material for eyeglasses in the 1940s. Today, the solid nylon material used for eyewear is a thermoplastic polymer blend. Some eyewear makers have their own proprietary nylon blends, such as Oakley with its O Matter synthetic material, which was engineered to maximize strength and comfort and for resistance to items like sunscreen, DEET, and makeup. Nylon is often used by sports eyewear manufacturers because it is easily molded into wraparound styles as well as other shapes that are difficult to produce.
FEATURES & BENEFITS: Flexible yet stiff, nylon is durable, lightweight, and strong. It is also hypoallergenic.
DRAWBACKS: Nylon can be stiff and sometimes difficult to adjust.
OTHER USES: Solid nylon is also used for hair combs and low-stress mechanical parts such as machine screws and gears.
