Driving Safety
ZEISS Vision Care has launched ZEISS DriveSafe—everyday lenses that are designed to help patients deal with the special visual challenges that go with driving. Available in progressive and single-vision designs, DriveSafe lenses offer all-day performance while addressing the visual needs that come with driving on rainy or cloudy days and at night, facing headlight glare, and shifting head positions.
“Every winter, more than 1.3 million people search the Internet for topics like ‘night driving’ and ‘driving in the rain.’ This suggests that many people are experiencing problems in these situations and are actively seeking a solution. ZEISS DriveSafe makes it easy for ECPs to address this significant patient need.”
—JENS BOY, ZEISS VISION CARE president, North America
Specifically, the lens design features larger distance and midrange zones to allow faster refocusing from the road to the dashboard. It also has a DuraVision DriveSafe AR coating that reduces headlight glare by targeting the wavelengths of the xenon and LED headlights that cause blurred vision and discomfort in night driving.
DriveSafe lenses also employ ZEISS’ proprietary Luminance Design technology based on pupil size in low light conditions, resulting in more natural vision at twilight and on cloudy days.

No Blue
Digital Eye Lab (DEL), a division of ABB Optical Group, is now offering bluDEFENSE, an anti-reflective coating under the lab’s propriety CLARIS brand. The coating reflects harmful blue light and UV and allows only beneficial light to pass through the lens, thereby helping to protect patients’ eyes from the risks associated with blue light exposure.
CLARIS bluDEFENSE joins the CLARIS family of premium AR products, including CLARIS HD and CLARIS HD Plus, which offers high levels of clean-ability, scratch protection, and durability, according to the company. Manufactured in DEL’s onsite AR coating lab, all CLARIS AR lenses are super-hydrophobic, oleophobic, and dust repellent.

A New Day
New from CooperVision are the MyDay silicone hydrogel daily disposable contact lenses. The lenses are made with Smart Silicone chemistry, which delivers a hybrid of benefits—the best of both hydrogel and silicone hydrogel lenses. Smart Silicone optimizes oxygen permeability in a lens that is just 4.4% silicon—the lowest percentage of silicon found in a silicone hydrogel daily disposable.
MyDay daily disposable lenses feature sphere powers from +6.00D to -10.00D (0.50 steps after +5.00D and -6.00D); a base curve of 8.4mm; a diameter of 14.2mm; a Dk/t of 100 (@ -3.00D); and a modulus of 0.4 MPa.

Fitting Made Easy
Volk Optical announces the launch of Volk Eye Check for the contact lens market. An addition to the current Volk Eye Check device, which provides ocular measurements and aids in the diagnosis of ophthalmic abnormalities such as strabismus, the Volk Eye Check Contact Lens module is a new software application focused on helping the contact lens practitioner achieve a quicker fitting process and reduce dropout rates.
By automatically providing objective and accurate measurements of key eye parameters, such as HVID, pupils, and lids, the Volk Eye Check Contact Lens module will assist practitioners in quickly identifying patients who may require nonstandard optics in their lenses, and also assist in the quick and smooth fitting of progressive, RGP, and scleral lenses.

All-Day Comfort
The newest launch from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, ACUVUE OASYS Brand Contact Lenses 1-Day with HydraLuxe technology, uses a new lens with a tear-infused design to provide comfort throughout the day. It was developed in response to research indicating that contact lens performance and comfort decline throughout a day of activities such as looking at smart phones, using computers, and being in air conditioning—all of which contribute to the destabilization of the natural tear film.
The “Eye-Inspired Design” uses a tear-infused material that integrates with contact lens wearers’ own tear film and an electrolyte-balanced packaging solution to mimic human tears. It also features enlarged optics to help wearers see clearly, even when their pupils may be enlarged due to low light. The lens’ increased lens diameter ensures full corneal limbus coverage during blinking.

Barrel Work
When a patient comes into your dispensary with the temples on their frame flopping up and down and making a comfortable fit impossible, it is often because the wings on the barrel attached to the frame front are off at a sizable angle rather than being parallel. To correct this, you need a tool to grab each wing, straighten and align it, and set the proper distance between wings.
The new Barrel Aligning Plier from Western Optical Supply is the perfect tool for this adjustment. In moments you can reset the proper alignment and spacing to reassemble the frame so the temple is a good tight fit.
