Now for High Rx’s: TRIBRID
Though the material’s development was announced three years ago, PPG Industries has now officially launched Tribrid in North America.
Developed by PPG using a hybrid material approach incorporating the chemistry for Trivex lens material with traditional high-index lens material chemistry, the resulting Tribrid is a high-index lens that offers the combination of visual comfort, protection, and performance with enhanced thinness.
“Tribrid material is a unique, unprecedented approach to high-index lenses and is ideal for eyecare professionals who want to offer a fully optimized visual experience to patients with more demanding vision-correction needs.”
—PHILIP WOJCIK, PPG general manager, optical monomers and coatings
The lenses are available in semi-finished single-vision clear lenses and are compatible with digital free-form processing and anti-reflective coatings.

Suited to patients with higher prescriptions, Tribrid lens material features include:
Optical clarity (an Abbe number of 41)
Light weight (density of 1.23 grams per cubic centimeter)
Thinness (refractive index of 1.60)
Impact resistance
100% UV protection
With the launch of Tribrid in the region, Global Optics (a lens supplier to independent labs in North America) has announced that any optical laboratory can now apply to become a Global Optics associate member.

Next-Gen Shield
VSP Optics Group has released its next-generation blue light protection product, TechShield Blue, an AR coating that reduces blue light exposure while maintaining natural transmittance of light across the rest of the visible spectrum. It replaces the company’s Sharper Image TechShield.
TechShield Blue targets the highest-energy blue light wavelengths associated with digital eye strain, absorbing and reflecting incoming light. The near-clear coating also delivers advanced AR benefits, including enhanced visual performance, backside UV protection, and minimal backside reflectance, the company notes.
It is available on all lens designs and materials, including the full UNITY portfolio.

New iD Designs x 3
HOYA Vision Care has expanded its “New Media Optics” lens portfolio with the release of iD Space, Screen, and Zoom. The three new free-form lens designs use HOYA’s Integrated Double Surface Design (IDSD) and are designed to bridge the gap between technology and experience.
iD Space, Screen, and Zoom have customizable fitting values to ensure each individual’s workspace is part of the lens design. Each design is tailored for the wearer’s primary vision field need: space for an office environment, screen for digital screen distance, and zoom for close-up detailed work.
“The mission for our New Media Optics portfolio is to move independent practices from the computer-pair-as-second-pair mentality and to use iD Space, Screen, and Zoom to maximize the comfort of their patients during the most stressful part of their day—work!” says Barney Dougher, president, HOYA Vision Care Americas.

High-Performance Photochromics
Fast and dark. That’s how Vision Ease is describing its latest line of polycarbonate photochromic lenses, currently available in an improved “true gray” color. A brown will be released in early 2017.
In internal light transmission tests conducted by Vision Ease, the new photochromic lenses are reportedly 2.5% clearer indoors and 7.3% darker outdoors, and present a faster activation (27%) and quicker fadeback (44%) than a national brand. The lenses also block 91% of blue light outdoors and 43% of blue light indoors.
Upcoming availability of numerous polycarbonate gray styles include SFSV, A SFSV, D28 bifocal, D35 bifocal, 7x28 trifocal, and a decentered Novel Progressive.

A First! Lens Checker
Asahi Vision entered the U.S. optical market at Vision Expo West and introduced a new product category with its aLC-100 Lens Checker.
This first-of-its-kind imaging device can help ECPs discover impurities, scratches, lens distortions, and other defects on either spectacle lenses or contact lenses. It can also be used to read the markings on PALs. The lens is placed on the device, and its surface is magnified onto an LCD screen for both the ECP and patient to see.
The lens checker can be used to determine whether lens replacement is necessary, to demonstrate the role that high-quality lenses play in providing clear vision, and to provide documentation of lens damage for patient records.
