Matt Geller, O.D., wants you to love your job.

As the founder of newgradoptometry.com and optometrystudents.com , and co-founder of covalentcareers.com , Dr. Geller, who no longer practices, says, “I live vicariously through the O.D.s we help to find jobs they love.”

So, what’s on his radar for the next generation of optometrists?

“Going forward, we need leaders to help optometry integrate with new technologies and to create system efficiencies that will lead to better patient experiences,” Dr. Geller says. “Focus on what other industries are doing to win, and take lessons from them.”

1. Begin with your company’s reason for existing, its purpose. Then set your 20-plus-year goal and filter all BUSINESS DECISIONS through it.
2. _____ is on the other side of hard work. Fill in the blank with whatever you really want in your life.
3. Don’t worry so much about expenses, focus on your return on investment. DON’T WORRY so much about your revenue, focus on your cash flow.
4. PRACTICE DISCIPLINE. Stop watching Netflix or ESPN and instead use that time to work toward your major goals.
5. Leading by example is not the best way to lead, it’s the ONLY WAY TO LEAD.
6. Stop working in your business and instead WORK ON YOUR BUSINESS.
7. A culture of radical truth + transparency and one that encourages professional debate will uncover the BEST DECISIONS your company should make.
