ABO-certified optician and former ophthalmic tech Kayla Heersink is reframing the conversation.
Inspired by the racial justice movement, Heersink is fusing her network on Instagram (@opticali_style) and love of designer-driven eyewear to support BIPOC causes and communities.
Celebrated brands Gogosha Optique, l.a.Eyeworks, Blake Kuwahara, and more recently donated frames for a weekly raffle ($10 for entry), organized by Heersink herself.
So far, organizations including My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, NavajoStrong, and Black Mamas Matter Alliance have benefited from 100% of the proceeds, which Heersink receives via Venmo.
“My #reframingtheconversation Instagram initiative has connected me with industry folks from all over the U.S. who want to do something good,” she says. “It really lifts my spirit sending off a donation every Friday.”
Here, Heersink dishes on avocado add-ons, her theme song, and more.
What inspired you to pursue a career in eye care?
It’s the family business. My dad and brother are both O.D.s.
Greatest source of inspiration?
Exploring a new city on foot.
Best activity to find calm?
A long walk with no destination.
Your most rewarding professional accomplishment?
I was asked to style a very high-profile client after a fun encounter with his personal stylist. I still get a thrill when I see him on TV wearing the frame we selected together.
Your eyecare heroes?
I have so many, but my dad is No. 1. My other top three are Gai Gherardi, Blake Kuwahara, and Julia Gogosha, who are always pushing our industry forward.
Most likely to splurge on?
Avocado add-ons.
The song playing in the soundtrack to your life?
My theme song is “I Can’t Wait” by Nu Shooz.
Podcast in your earbuds?
There’s an amazing episode of “Reply All: #158 The Case of the Missing Hit.” It’s wonderfully wacky! You’ll love it.
