The annual sports-centric edition of Eyecare Business serves as a reminder of how pertinent eye health is to overall health, and how beneficial sports vision can be as a specialty within the eyecare practice.
As Cira Collins, MPH, ABOM, NCLEC, revealed to EB ahead of her “Work Hard, Play Harder: Sports Vision In Motion” course at Vision Expo East, “As optometry develops subspecialties, opticians need to be prepared to meet our optometry partners fully equipped, with all the tools to support our mutual business. In sports vision, that means that we must understand the unique visual and safety needs of athletes and match those needs with tools.”

To assist, this month’s EB features aim to equip eyecare professionals with several sports-specific tools pertaining to eyewear and eye care—from trending, athlete-ready or athleisure-approved frames, revealed in the Game On feature, to an emphasis of the importance of properly presenting the concept of sports vision in practice, outlined in The Five Gameplay Rules of Sport Lenses feature—a continuation of Collins’ key insights.
For further inspiration, consider these statistics from the State of Fashion 2025 report from McKinsey & Company and The Business of Fashion as food for thought:
• In a week, two-thirds of millennial and Generation Z consumers don athleisure fashion multiple times.
• More than half (56%) of Gen Z customers consider fitness as a very high priority, with older generations becoming more active worldwide.
• By 2030, the global sports tourism sector is expected to grow by 18%.
As the sport and athleisure markets continue to power up and opportunities to dive into the game continue, we’ll be cheering you on from the sidelines.
