Feb. 16, 2023 — LinkedIn has released its 2023 Workplace Learning Report, which explores the importance, effectiveness, and prevalence of learning and development for employees and the organization.
While last year’s report showed learning and development becoming more essential, this year is characterized by an effort to ensure that “people strategy and business strategy are one and the same,” with the following key focus areas: aligning learning programs to business goals, upskilling employees, creating a culture of learning, and improving employee retention.
(For more about the importance of fostering culture in the workplace, see EB’s editor-in-chief Erinn Morgan’s recent conversation with Society for Human Resource Management CEO Johnny Taylor Jr.)
Here are some of the report’s key takeaways:
- The top 10 skills companies need the most rank in importance starting with management and followed by communication, customer service, leadership, sales, product management, research, analytical skills, marketing, and teamwork.
- Eighty-three percent of responding organizations report a desire to build a more people-centric culture, where human needs guide the design of employee experiences.
- Ninety-three percent of organizations are concerned about employee retention, and the No. 1 way respondents are working to improve this is by providing learning opportunities.
- Skill sets for jobs have changed by 25% since 2015—a figure that’s expected to double by 2027.
- Among executives, 82% believe the HR function is more critical now than ever before.
- Younger workers seek career and learning opportunities, as respondents ages 18-34 find opportunities for career growth within the company (35%) and opportunities to develop new skills (31%) most important when considering a new job.
