March 22, 2023 — According to Numerator’s recently published 2023 Holiday Intentions Preview report, most respondents said they plan to make a purchase related to a given holiday, but 53% expect a moderate to significant economic impact, which they plan to manage by buying items on sale, buying less, and using more coupons.
The following are some key takeaways:
- Nine in 10 respondents say they plan to buy items for a given holiday, with 98% anticipating purchasing items for Christmas and 96% for Halloween.
- This year, 53% of respondents expect inflation or a potential economic slowdown to affect their holiday celebrations. To save money, 67% plan to buy items on sale, 48% plan to buy less, and 47% plan to use more coupons.
- Consumers are preferring to shop in store for holidays this year, with Christmas being the only holiday where online shoppers (75%) outnumber those planning to shop in store (73%).
- Gathering with friends and family is the main way respondents plan to celebrate for 11 out of the 14 major holidays, led by Christmas (73%), Thanksgiving (64%), Independence Day (63%), and Easter (57%).
- When it comes to food-related purchases, 88% of consumers plan to shop for Thanksgiving followed by Independence Day (80%), Labor Day (78%), and Memorial Day (78%).
- Cinco de Mayo (54%), New Year’s Eve (52%), and Independence Day (46%) top the charts for holiday-related alcohol purchases.
