May 2, 2023 — According to the results of the National Retail Federation (NRF)’s annual survey, consumers plan to spend a total of $35.7 billion on Mother’s Day this year—more than $4 billion more than last year’s record high of $31.7 billion.
The 84% of U.S. adults expected to celebrate the holiday plan to spend an average of $274.02 per person, the highest recorded within the survey’s history. (The previous record was last year at $245.76.) Aged 35-44, top spenders plan to spend an average of $382.26. Most (57%) are purchasing gifts for a mother or stepmother, followed by a wife (23%) or daughter (12%), and the most popular gifts are flowers and greeting cards (74%) followed by special outings (60%).
While expected spending is up across all gift categories, jewelry leads with $7.8 billion, followed by $5.6 billion on special outings and $4 billion on electronics. Consumers continue to prioritize thoughtful gifts with 47% searching for items that are unique and 42% seeking to create a special memory.
Online and department stores both lead as methods of shopping at 34%, followed by 30% of consumers planning to shop at specialty stores, 24% planning to shop at local and small businesses, and 23% shopping at discount stores. Up from 39% last year, 46% are interested in purchasing product subscription boxes.
