May 24, 2023 — The Vision Council has released a statement to express gratitude for the recently introduced Sports Eyewear Safety Month resolution, sponsored by Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC).
In support of the goals set by Sports Eyewear Safety Month, the resolution states the following key points:
- Ninety percent of sports-related eye injuries can be prevented with the proper eyewear.
- Currently, 30,000 sports-related eye injuries are seen in emergency rooms each year in the U.S., and most of them happen to those under age 18.
- Sports and recreation activities are associated with one-fourth of all pediatric eye injuries.
- Regular eyewear and contact lenses do not offer adequate protection against sports-related eye injuries.
- Protective eyewear designed for specific sports is as important as other protective gear.
- Wearers should ensure their eyewear has undergone the proper testing and meets the current American Society for Testing and Materials safety standard for the selected sport.
