The Shoulder Pad Queen
Avalon offers Norma Kamali sunwear
The story goes, Norma Kamali raided football locker rooms to find inspiration for her clothes with linebacker shoulder pads. The look ultimately became a hallmark of 80s style. Her other fashion innovations include jumpsuits made from parachutes and sleeping bag coats. More recently, Oprah was featured on one of her magazine covers outfitted from head to toe in Kamalis signature jersey knits. After launching a 35-piece ophthalmic collection under the Norma Kamali name in January 2000, Avalon is now extending the line to include sunwear. The collection includes 12 plastics, two metals, and two rimless styles with fashion tints. The frames are available in fun colors with funky names such as: Jungle Fever, Plum Crazy, Blackout, and Illusion. All frames are made in Italy and wholesale from $44.95 to $49.95. Merchandising materials include: a four-piece display unit, ID plaque, poster, and three-panel countercard. For more information, call 888-767-0383.

The World of Barbie
REM launches Barbie eyewear
Ever since Barbie made her debut at New York Citys Toy Fair back in 1959, she has been winning the hearts of both little girls and adult women for more than four decades. Her enduring success can be credited to the fact that Barbie has always stayed current in both lifestyle and fashion trends. Knowing Barbie has such strong brand recognition, REM Eyewear partnered with Mattel to launch Barbie eyewear, which is targeted to girls ranging from four to nine years in age. The line features 10 ophthalmic styles in metal and plastic/metal combinations. Frame shapes include a modified soft square, pillow, teardrop, oval, bowtie, and soft rectangle. They come in colors such as toffee, magenta, aquamarine, royal blue, lilac, and cotton candy, among many others. Classic Barbie motifs are integrated into the frames, such as flowers, hearts, and, of course, the Barbie logo. The collection wholesales from $29.95 to $34.95. There will be a variety of point-of-purchase materials available to support the collection, such as logo plaques, posters, and display units. For more information, call 800-423-3023.

Polarized Plus
Eyespace introduces New Eyes
Since post-operative laser surgery patients and contact lens wearers are particularly sensitive to glare, Eyespace has introduced a polarized sunwear collection targeted specifically to their needs. Called New Eyes, the sunwear line features Japanese-crafted CR 39 lenses with vertically-oriented polarizers that eliminate horizontally polarized light. Lenses are coated with an ultra-thin polarizing film, and an anti-reflective backside that is also water repellent. The 12-piece collection includes seven zyls and five metal frames. All frames are made in Germany and include added-value features like spring hinges and silicone nose pads. Wholesale prices for the collection range from $49 to $59. Point-of-purchase materials include a 20-piece rotating countertop display and an annodized aluminum logo plaque. For more information on New Eyes, call 800-827-6460.
