Hot List: August 2009
1 Sunwear Stats
Sunwear sales continue to rise in the U.S. For the 12 months ending in June 2008, sales reached $2.23 billion, compared to $2.19 billion in 2007 and $2.12 billion in 2006.
While the biggest chunk of sales occurs in sunglass speciality stores, independent optical shops are seeing the biggest boost in sunwear sales:
2 Back to School Budgeting
According to the National Retail Federation's 2009 Back to School Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, the average family with students in grades kindergarten through 12 is expected to spend $548.72 on school merchandise, a decline of 7.7 percent from $594.24 in 2008. In addition:
- Four out of five Americans (85 percent) have made some changes to back-to-school plans this year
- 56.2 percent of back-to-school shoppers are hunting for sales more often
- 49.6 percent are planning to spend less overall
3 deals go local

Luxottica Launches "Working Together Series" |
---|
Luxottica Group announced the launch of its Working Together Series: Share, Inspire & Lead. This series of 10 dedicated customer events launches on Sept. 9 in San Diego and will tour the country from west to east in the third quarter of 2009 and into 2010, finishing at Vision Expo East in New York. Earlier this year, Luxottica's executives began "listen and learn" conversations, meeting with independent vision care providers across the country. Notes Pierre Fay, executive vice president, Luxottica Wholesale, "What we discovered during our listen and learn conversations was that ECPs are interested to see how we can help grow the market. They were very interested to see how we can help them and how to grow business and leverage the resources available." Designed to cultivate discussions and share valuable learning from Luxottica's Retail and Managed Vision Care operations, the Working Together Series will host groups of 100 for an evening of hands-on work and frank conversation. "It establishes a professional community right in their own backyard," Fay says. Topics will be presented by Luxottica's senior executives and include advancing quality eyecare and eyewear, increasing profits in a medically based practice, sun protection, and optimizing patient visits through proven dispensing techniques. "We are bringing experts from within the company to share their learning," he adds. At the events' evening reception, attendees will have the opportunity to preview the new Spring/Summer 2010 collection. The Working Together Series illustrates Luxottica's renewed efforts to reach out to the independent practitioner community. "At the end of the day, this is to grow the overall optical industry," Fay notes. While the campaign will not include a stop at Vision Expo West, the series will be wrapping in New York City next spring. "We are looking at the business way for Luxottica to engage and interact with its wholesale customers. We will continue to support Vision Expo East," says Fay. For more information about the Working Together Series, please email mdeconto@us.luxottica.com. |
