The very epitome of geek chic, eyewear in the tradition of the Ray-Ban classic Clubmaster takes a mid-century gem—rediscovered in the 1980s, too—and updates it for current consumers. While this distinctive style isn't for everybody, creative shaping, styling, and coloring have made the look more accessible to a wider audience.
A few updates that have brought the Clubmaster into the 21st century are:
■ Bold colors: In its first heyday, the Clubmaster was a mix of black plastic and metal with limited color options. Today's styles show well in bright colors and face-flattering tones.
■ Shaped up: A rectangular take on the Clubmaster opens up the style to a wider range of face shapes with a more universally flattering fit.
■ Texturized: Whether a spiced-up temple with layered acetate or a matte finish metal detailing, more depth adds more appeal for these styles.
■ Retro flair: For purists, there are still models that adhere to the original Clubmaster aesthetic, invoking memories of an idealized America from days gone by. EB
