Island Optics’ Amie and Bryan Finley find success sharing the buying business
amie and Bryan Finley, LDO, are co-owners of Island Opticians in Palm Beach, FL, working as a team in life and in the dispensary. Here they share their insights on how they make buying for their optical a success by putting together strong inventory plans—together.
eb: What’s it like to run an optical together as a married couple?
a/bf: We love working together, and each of our strengths complements the other’s weaknesses, so we make a good team. It’s nice to be able to bounce ideas off someone who has the same goals and is as invested as you. Plus, it creates a system of checks and balances, so one of us doesn’t go crazy buying product on an emotional whim!
eb: How do each of you contribute to the buying process?
a/bf: Bryan does most of the research on new frame lines, etc., but we always try to look at new product together.
eb: Does having a man and a woman in on the frame selection process improve the quality of your inventory? In what ways?
a/bf: We’d like to think so! By having both of us involved in selection, we’re able to select from both genders’ perspectives. Since men are typically geared toward seeking quality and functionality, and women are usually more fashion-oriented (and we both tend to fit those stereotypes), with both of us involved, we never sacrifice quality for fashion, or vice versa.
HOT STUFF
WHAT BRANDS AND PRODUCTS ARE YOUR PATIENT AND PRACTICE FAVORITES?
A/BF: Oh there are so many! Amie’s favorites are Modo’s paper-thin titanium collection—super light and comfy, flexible, and colorful without being obnoxious; Coco Song—a gorgeous use of vibrant colors and natural elements; and Rye & Lye—wonderful Italian flair using fabric, leather, wood, glass, velour, and stone. Bryan’s faves are Swissflex—unbeatable comfort and customization; Blackfin (style Edge shown above)—elegant style and great colors; and custom clips by Arnold De’ Burdo at CustomEyes (shown right). He does amazing things!
