CUSTOM EXPERIENCE
Shamir Insight is offering ECPs a way to up their sunwear game with a fashion-focused prescription sun system called Shamir X3. The program enables ECPs to offer a complete sunwear solution that includes Rx lenses, proprietary mirrors, lens engravings, and more. It is focused on providing patients the best solution optically as well as delivering a “fashionable experience.”
The X3 adds an element of exclusivity by letting the patient select just about any pair of frames on the board in combination with Shamir’s progressive and single vision designs. The program offers a choice of fashion tints and mirrors (including an ability to match the tint to the exact color of the frame), and provides advanced expression options by allowing each patient to add their own signature engraving onto the lens. Proprietary lens designs ensure the thinnest lenses for their prescription, the company notes.
To support the new package offering, Shamir opened a state-of-the-art edging lab in Los Angeles to provide the specialized services necessary for Shamir X3 orders.
“The use of specialized software and tools allows Shamir to overcome technology limitations that come with high wrap and complex frames,” says Mark Becker, vice president of marketing and strategic partnerships. “The technology and expertise of Shamir’s edging team provides a premium sun solution that not only offers specialized edging capabilities but also an expanded power range to further benefit patients.”

NEW MATERIAL
Transitions Drivewear lenses from Younger Optics are now available in single vision Trilogy Trivex material. The new availability allows drivers to combine Transitions’ photochromic technology with advanced NuPolar polarization, along with the high-impact resistance and optics of the Trilogy lens. The lenses darken behind the windshield of a car, adapting to varying daylight conditions and are polarized to block blinding glare.
Transitions Drivewear lenses are also available in hard resin (single vision, flat top 28 bifocals, Younger’s IMAGE progressive), as well as polycarbonate (single vision and IMAGE progressive).

PEEPING CLEAN
Created by LensPen, Peeps is a new all-in-one eyeglass and sunglass cleaner. Peeps uses the same carbon-clearning technology that LensPen products have used to clean fine optics for more than two decades.
A retractable goat-hair brush cleans the lens of any dust or particles on the surface. Then, users slide the arms out from the holder and clean the lens with the cleaning tips. When the arms slide back into the holder, the carbon on the tips is replenished for the next use. The tips can recharged up to 500 times.

PRESSING ON
New from Western Optical Supply, Inc., the Eyewire Curving Press is a tool that provides, according to the company, the ideal way to perfectly mate the curve of the eyewire to the base curve of the lens bevel.
The optician or tech places the eyewire between the matching 6- or 9-base curved blocks, and screws it closed. The Eyewire Curving Press presses the curve simultaneously in the same place on the top and bottom of the eyewire. The device can be tightened or loosened for other variations in base curves. The press can also be used to narrow the bridge for a better fit and to reduce the frame DBL.
A tutorial video featuring live demonstration can be viewed on the company website.

EYE STRAIN APP
ZEISS has developed a free downloadable app to help ECPs identify patients with symptoms of digital eye strain and support sales of the new ZEISS Digital Lens.
The app gives an initial indication that the patient is experiencing symptoms, and helps ECPs start a conversation about how to address them with solutions like ZEISS Digital Lens.
The app is available in two versions; one is tablet-based and designed for use in the practice, and the other is smartphone-based and can be downloaded directly by consumers. Each measures visual performance in the course of repeated changes of focus from near to distance, with an assessment provided at the end. The consumer version gives the user the opportunity to learn more about ZEISS Digital Lens and to find a ZEISS practice in his or her area.

MEASURING BLUE LIGHT
HOYA Vision Care is now offering a blue light measuring device that works in conjunction with the company’s HVC Viewer app to demonstrate for patients the amount of blue light that is emanating from a source and how much is mitigated by the company’s lens products.
The unit is plugged into the microphone jack of an iPad directly or with the included extension cord. The HVC Viewer app, available on iTunes, is required for the device to work. The purpose of the extension cord is to give the ECP flexibility during the demonstration.
ECPs can hold the blue light measuring device near any source of blue light and let the patient look at the readings on the iPad screen, then place a HOYA lens treated with Recharge AR or an indoor or outdoor BluTech lens material in between the light source and the measuring device and watch the reading change.
