The 2016 Optometry’s Meeting lifted off June 29 with motivational advice from an astronaut, as Buzz Aldrin one of the first human beings to set foot on the lunar surface on July 21, 1969, shared his story in the opening session and inspired attendees to "dream higher."
The 119th Annual American Optometric Association (AOA) Congress & 46th Annual American Optometric Student Association Conference—held June 29-July 3 in Boston, was a chance for camaraderie, education on the latest clinical advancements, and honoring the work of fellow O.D.s and students.

Andrea P. Thau, O.D., of New York, was sworn in as AOA president. Addressing the House of Delegates in her inaugural address, she said: "(This) is a trust that I don't take lightly, and I have a dedication to really want to help advance our profession. I think each one of us has to be able to contribute back to our profession at the highest level that we possibly can."
Others elected to the Board of Trustees, were president-elect Christopher J. Quinn, O.D., of New Jersey; vice president Samuel D. Pierce, O.D., of Alabama; and Secretary-Treasurer Barbara L. Horn, O.D., of Michigan and South Carolina.Robert C. Layman, O.D., of Ohio was re-elected as trustee. Newly elected was Jacqueline Bowen, O.D., of Colorado and Steven T. Reed, O.D., of Mississippi.
The AOA committees reported to the House of Delegate about their work in advancing the profession on all fronts and waging legislative challenges, around what the committees consider the advent of disruptive technologies, harmful business practices implemented by vision plans and scope of practice measures.
Earlier in the week, a raucous crowd cheered Michigan College of Optometry on to victory in the 25th annual Varilux Optometry Student Bowl, sponsored by Essilor, as optometry student Evan Andrews won the coveted crystal trophy, and Southern College of Optometry took home the "Spirit Award" for most energetic and outlandish representation.
Optometry’s Meeting 2017 will be held June 21-25 in Washington, D.C.
