A CLOSER LOOK
High-Tech Measurements
Spark Mi, the new measurement device from Shamir Insight, Inc., looks and acts like a tabletop mirror but is also a measuring device that allows ECPs to take all required measurements in one click. It works with dark lenses as well as clear.
With Spark Mi, the patient looks in the “mirror” wearing their chosen glasses. One click on the device captures the image, and the image appears on the optician’s computer screen, along with the patient’s PD.
“We are excited to bring this new offering to Shamir customers to help them grow their practice, save time, and create a better patient experience.”
—MARK BECKER, vice president, marketing and strategic partnerships, Shamir Insight
With that, the optician can now get all the other measurements needed from the computer: FH, frame box, DBL, vertex, panoramic, and pantoscopic tilt.
A USB cord is included with the Spark Mi to hook up the device to a computer. An Internet connection is preferred, but not required.
For practices participating in Shamir’s ReCreating Perfect Vision Rewards Program, Spark Mi can be purchased for 262,500 rewards points.

Screen Protector
Expert Optics optical laboratory is now distributing EyeSafe digital device screen covers for ECPs who wish to offer another method of blue light protection to their patients. The LED screens of digital devices deliver higher levels of blue light to the retina than conventional domestic light sources, and our near constant use of the devices has health agencies concerned about resulting eye damage.
EyeSafe’s RPF-60 film (RPF stands for Retinal Protection Factor) filters 60% of blue light within the 420nm-460nm spectrum. Available in all screen sizes, the thin and pliable polymer also protects digital screens from scratches, and it can be applied and taken off effortlessly. Expert Optics is offering a clinical kit, which includes the product as well as a display to present it to patients.
EyeSafe is a trademark of Healthe LLC, which offers other screen filters as well, each with its own level of blue light protection. Only the RPF-60 is available from Expert Optics.

More Options in Bifocal Transitions
Transitions Signature VII Flat Top 28 polycarbonate composite lenses from Younger Optics are now available in brown as well as the existing gray, increasing the choices for patients who want segmented bifocals and photochromic lenses.
Younger Optics and Transitions Optical developed a polycarbonate composite lens that incorporates a thin photochromic, front-surface bifocal layer made of Trivex—resulting in a photochromic bifocal that is surfaced, polished, edged, and dispensed just like a clear polycarbonate lens.
According to Transitions, approximately one in five pairs of lenses sold today are segmented multi-focals, and a majority of those are bifocals, indicating a significant demand for segmented lenses.
The lenses are available exclusively from Younger Optics’ distributing labs.

FastGrind Photochromic
Super Optical has released Conversion—a line of UV-blocking, clear-to-dark photochromic lenses. Conversion photochromic technology is now available with the FastGrind ADDvantage HD Plus progressives, single-vision, and finished single-vision lenses. Flat Top 28 Conversion lenses will be released in the coming months.
Conversion’s photochromic properties are in-mass, and the special monomer used will not yellow over time, the company notes. Additionally, the use of a monomer solution retains the shift-speed (rate from light to dark and back to light).
Conversion photochromic lenses are specifically for use with Super Optical’s FastGrind, an all-in-one modified lens surfacing system for independent practices.
