A CLOSER LOOK
‘X’ Marks a New Varilux Design
This month, Essilor is launching a major redesign to its premium progressive lens product. Called the Varilux X Series, the lens retains the technology that was in the Varilux S Series but adds a whole new dimension, including optimizing visual performance for tasks within arm’s reach.
The lens is an advancement over traditional progressives’ midrange zone that provides clear vision at only one distance at any given point in the channel. The Varilux X uses new “Xtend Technology” and a new set of complex lens calculations to give wearers clear vision at a number of midrange distances without the need to move their head or eyes to find the “sweet spot.”
Xtend Technology provides simultaneous vision in these multiple near distances between roughly 16 and 28 inches. With this technology, Essilor has optimized wearers’ vision for multitasking. The result is significantly extended vision at all distances, whether sitting and reading a book, using multiple digital devices at a time, or shifting vision between distances while driving a vehicle, Essilor notes.
The new lens design retains the Nanoptix and SynchronEyes technologies from the Varilux S Series, which provide a wide field of vision with no “swim.”
Varilux X Series is available in three options: Varilux X Design (fit with PD and fitting height like any progressive), Varilux X Fit (adjusted to work with the Position-of-Wear measurements), and Varilux X 4D (dispensed with the Visioffice measuring system).
This new PAL design comes standard as part of Essilor’s new Ultimate Lens Package, bundled with Crizal 360 and Transitions Signature VII lens treatments (see page 29 for details).
“It still progresses from distance to near, but along the way it’s been calculated to provide you, at any one location, with a multitude of powers so that you can see clearly and in focus. It really is quite something.”

Next-Gen Autorefractor
Smart Vision Labs has released its newest wavefront autorefractor in its SVOne series of digital diagnostic tools. The latest device incorporates advances in technology and scientific algorithms, which help produce accurate and instantaneous results for doctors.
According to Smart Vision Labs, the new autorefractor has a 40% improvement in the precision of the refraction, is twice as fast returning results (compared with the previous version), and requires minimal training. Additionally, the SVOne includes new hardware that eliminates most alignment issues.
The device is ideal for use in mobile optometry practices, nursing homes, school screenings, and optical practices with limited space. A notable update to the device is a new stand that eliminates most alignment issues, and the device can also be attached to a standard tripod for portability.

Rimless Helper
Western Optical Supply has redesigned its #5121F post-pushing pliers with features that enable opticians to easily (and safely) extract the post and tubing from a compression rimless lens.
A new parallel jaw design helps to easily push out the post and tubing from the lens holes—and will not mar the lens, according to Western Optical Supply. In addition, extraction pins pivot easily to accommodate horizontal and vertical mounting systems.
