Follow this highly influential, truly gracious, and fully fashion-defining duo from dawn to dusk
Christian Roth has been a globally influential arbiter of eyewear style since his first eyewear debuted in 1983. His eponymous eyewear collections have been coveted (and collected) by specs aficionados and the glitterati alike.
After launching Christian Roth for Optical Affairs in 1983, he quickly found champions among the most notable names in art and fashion. In 1990, Christian Roth was invited to join the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)—a first for an eyewear designer—and he is a founding executive member of the Eyewear Designers of the CFDA (edCFDA).
Today, Roth, along with his longtime partner, Eric Domege, has launched a fresh, new Christian Roth collection with DITA Group. It is a design review that surveys Roth’s extensive body of work and deconstructs it for a refreshed paradigm of style and design.
Here, EB follows Roth and Domege on a style-infused day of the Christian Roth collection launch tour in Europe.
5:30 a.m.: We wake up in our hotel. The sun is already up. It takes a moment to realize where we are. We are in Munich, one of the last stops of a 17-stop promotion tour in Europe to introduce the new Christian Roth collection by DITA.
Munich is our stop No. 13, and now we have to get ready to catch an 8 a.m. flight to Paris to make it to stop No. 14 in the City of Lights.
6:30 a.m.: On the way to the airport, reading messages on all platforms and notice a lot of social media reactions on last night’s event at the famed Munich optician Leidmann. Leidmann threw a fantastic event for the brand at its uniquely designed flagship store on the über-chic Maximilianstraße.
7:15 a.m.: Made it through security and finally breakfast in the lounge while coordinating with DITA and the PR firms about our last night’s emails from editors and bloggers. Eric indulges on Leberkaese and potato salad...we cannot call it a healthy breakfast!
8:00 a.m.: Airborne to Paris. Blue skies. Always peaceful. Can’t resist to admire the early summer German countryside from 30,000 feet. We have two must-do interviews with tonight’s deadline to prepare. We have a busy day ahead of us, so we better get started.
10:00 a.m.: Driving into Paris, our favorite city and Eric’s hometown. The sun is shining and the cab driver is in a splendid mood—ingredients for a great day. We make a few calls to some of our favorite editors and influencers, hoping they will find the time to join tonight’s event at our favorite Parisian eyewear store, Marc Le Bihan on Rue Etienne Marcel.
10:40 a.m.: St. James Hotel on Rue Rivoli, opposite Les Tuileries. The concept store Colette is part of the hotel’s building—we cannot resist to immediately admire the fabulous display of our glasses. Then, we are rushing down Rue St. Honore to Church’s Shoes to pick up another pair of Christian’s signature brown suede Ryder boots.
11:30 a.m.: Back at the hotel—emails and phone calls and wrapping up the two interviews.
12:45 p.m.: Quick lunch around the corner at the Hotel Costes with a friend who is in charge of the incredible expansion of the hotel. Between light courses, we have the privilege to get a behind-the-scenes tour. A milestone concept to be soon unveiled in Paris.
1:30 p.m.: Finally, we have a few hours on our hands, we want to feel Paris and see something new. We head to Dani Roses to pick up a floral arrangement for a friend. We also stop by the VHN gallery to see the current Kris Martin exhibition. We also have time to visit two of our favorite vintage shops in her neighborhood (Rue Turenne).
2:55 p.m.: Hardly much time left, we spontaneously decide to go to the Palais Gallieria exhibit: “Dalida, a Wardrobe From the City to the Scene,” an incredible curated show of the diversity of ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s fashion. Dalida is part of French popular culture (Eric is a fan), and she had a fantastic style.
4:40 p.m.: Back at the hotel, we rush to refresh and get ready for tonight’s event. It’s almost 90 degrees in Paris now, so no jacket will be necessary.
5:00 p.m.: Skype with the DITA marketing team to discuss our strategy for some exciting upcoming press interviews.
6:18 p.m.: Arriving at the Marc Le Bihan optical store just in time to get familiar with the “pop-up” environment of our collections inside the shop. We meet and greet the Le Bihan team and ensure that all our visuals are ready for tonight’s event.
6:35 p.m.: Yes, the French are on time! The show starts, it is a warm summer day, the mood is light, the bubbles and petit fours are perfect. Our eyewear looks delicious.
7:20 p.m.: The store is packed with bloggers, journalists, local VIPs, and consumers. Everybody is enchanted with the collection. It’s so fun for us to walk the room and explain our work and the brand’s story. The shop is full and the crowd expands onto the sidewalk.
7:30 p.m.: We conduct a short interview with Le Point magazine. When done spontaneously in a full room, this can be a challenge!
8:45 p.m.: Times flies. Slowly the crowd dissipates, dinnertime for the Parisians. The attendance went totally over the expectations. We are happy and feel re-energized!
9:25 p.m.: After spending such intense happy hours together, it is always hard to part in such a situation. We walk back to the hotel, a beautiful night.
10:15 p.m.: A friend is texting and convinces us to join her at a dinner party, we call an Uber and have a great time meeting her eclectic group of friends.
11:55 p.m.: Not very Parisian and not very polite—we are last to come and the first to leave. We excuse ourselves, it has been a long and interesting day, we are getting tired and return to our hotel.
