Carissa Dunphy is steadfast in preserving opticianry.
“Be an advocate. Opticianry is in a volatile state, and it’s our responsibility to preserve the trade,” she says. “Get involved with optical associations, expand your expertise, and help teach others to sustain our trade for the future.
”She practices what she preaches; in 2018, Dunphy launched Optician Now, an information hub for individuals seeking certification or licensure. The platform has grown into a variety of resources. Plus, the marketing specialist for Professional Eye Care Associates of America (PECAA) recently received the Optical Women’s Association (OWA) Leadership Scholarship Award, using it to take part in a leadership course through Harvard University.
Here, the industry advocate shares her wisdom.
Your most distinctive characteristic?
Reliability. I work very hard to deliver 100% of what I commit to and be careful to not overcommit.
Best activity to find calm?
Rowing is how I unwind. I also love [smartphone game] Angry Birds.
Most likely to splurge on:
Glasses—no joke. There is something captivating about a fantastic frame with my favorite AR. Second place would be dessert.
Most rewarding professional accomplishment?
When a third party reaches out and thanks me for something I’ve done. The fact that my actions enabled another person to provoke thought, have an idea, take the next step, learn, grow, or be inspired—that’s the accomplishment.
Song playing in the soundtrack to your life?
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. Not only am I a small-town girl, but I have this undying fire of belief—it goes on and on and on and on.
Greatest source of inspiration?
My husband and son are what matters at the end of the day, and the inspiration for which all of my hard work comes from. Working hard and having no one to enjoy life with wouldn’t be any fun at all!
Podcasts in your earbuds?
Industry podcasts I listen to when I’m excited about their guest: OWA Talks, Practice Advantage, Defocus Media. I also listen to a ton of audiobooks.
