For eyecare professionals, staying ahead of evolving consumer behaviors is critical to thriving. Insights from forecasting company WGSN’s “Future Consumer 2026” report, presented by senior client and trend consultant Tamara Cloé Leguía at Mido 2025, highlighted four key consumer sentiments shaping purchasing decisions:

1. Moral Injury: Consumers feel conflicted when forced to compromise their values, such as choosing affordability over sustainability. Optical retailers should emphasize transparency, ethical sourcing, and sustainable product options while ensuring affordability.
2. Rational Optimism: Despite global challenges, consumers are seeking brands that embrace positivity and resilience. Optical businesses can build trust by emphasizing progress in eye health innovations, accessibility, and wellness-focused solutions.
3. Yearning: Consumers long for simplicity, nostalgia, and meaningful connections. Creating a personalized, customer-centric experience—whether through in-store interactions or digital touch points—will foster loyalty and engagement.
4. Glimmers: Small moments of joy and fulfillment will be highly valued. Optical stores can enhance this by providing thoughtful service, unique eyewear experiences, and sensory-driven retail environments.
WGSN also identified four emerging consumer profiles:
→ The Impartialists demand clear, artificial intelligence-assisted product information and transparent business practices.
→ The Autonomists value independence, inclusivity, and ethical business practices.
→ The Gleamers seek emotional well-being, social connection, and small moments of joy.
→ The Synergists embrace tech but desire a balance between digital and physical experiences.
“Come 2026, it is going to be imperative to focus on protection,” Leguía tells Eyecare Business. “Embrace novelty silhouettes to capitalize on the consumer appetite for nostalgic references and their priorities for sustainable practices including bio-based, recycled, and natural materials. Lastly, create new revenue streams through repair, recycle, and resale programs to facilitate long-term life spans for products.”
More considerations to future-proof optical businesses include integrating AI-driven personalization, fostering inclusivity, and offering services that cater to both digital and in-person interactions. Affordability and accessibility will be critical to maintaining customer trust and loyalty. By aligning with these insights, retailers can create a forward-thinking strategy that meets the needs of the 2026 eyewear consumer.
