May 17, 2023 — Following the United Nations’ (UN) call for its member countries to ensure good vision for all road users in alignment with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, EssilorLuxottica has announced a partnership with the United Nations Special Envoy for Road Safety.
According to a 2019 study, “Eyewear Usage and Attitudes,” which examined the sentiments of prescription wearers and non-wearers ages 5-65 in the U.S., France, India, China, and Brazil, 68% of regular drivers admitted their vision is not perfect for driving or riding in full safety at night, with 46% admitting the same sentiment for daytime driving. Further, 70% of people confirm their vision is hindered by sunlight and 30% by cars’ headlights at night.
To mark the UN Global Safety Week, which began on May 15, EssilorLuxottica has launched an awareness campaign to support the UN’s safety targets and highlight the call to action, “Check your vision—drive safe.” The company calls for regular eye exams to ensure accurate vision correction, enabling drivers to see clearly at all distances with proper solutions to manage glare both at night and during the day.
“It is our collective responsibility together with eyecare professionals to share the call to action with consumers across the world, contributing to safer roads,” says Paul du Saillant, deputy CEO of EssilorLuxottica.
“As we start a new decade of action for road safety, we have a key role to play by our actions at all levels, from authorities to individuals,” says Jean Todt, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety. “Like buckling up your safety belt and wearing a helmet, it is important to check your vision, protect your eyes from glare, [and] wear your prescribed glasses on the road. Simple rules can save lives.”
