May 2, 2023 — BHVI, an Australian-based nonprofit focused on vision research, has announced the launch of Myopia Awareness Week 2023—set to take place May 22-26.
BHVI will offer a variety of educational resources for eyecare professionals, advocates for myopia awareness, and the general public. This year, with the theme “Keep an Eye on Myopica,” there will be a special focus on making myopia management an essential part of pediatric eye health to slow the global progression of myopia, which is expected to affect 50% of the world’s population by 2050.
BHVI shares that it is past time for ECPs to include myopia management as an essential practice, especially with treatment options advancing each year with more research from leading organizations such as the International Myopia Institute and the Global Myopia Awareness Coalition.
“In the last few years, there has been an incredibly concerted effort from leading researchers and producers of eye health technology to develop robust treatment methods for slowing myopia progression. We are now at a critical stage in the effort to curb myopia, where we have the tools to create meaningful change,” says Yvette Waddell, CEO of BHVI. “It is now time to engage the entire eye health community…[so that] half the population doesn’t need to be impacted by this debilitating eye disease.”
