Feb. 23, 2023 — The SUNY College of Optometry and the SUNY Upstate Medical University have partnered to improve access to health care by fostering an increase in eyecare professionals in Central and Western New York.
Reports from local ECPs indicate that many positions remain vacant, and according to a recent survey conducted by SUNY College of Optometry, 25% of optometrists practicing in the region are planning to retire within the next five years. Through the partnership, the institutions will create an optometry campus extension program, offering a doctorate of optometry degree, collaborative vision research, access to eye care, and economic opportunities in the region—a move designed to provide a more affordable option for aspiring ECPs.
The program will parallel the doctor of optometry program SUNY College of Optometry currently offers. Pending successful completion of all state and accrediting body approvals, the first class is anticipated to start in the fall of 2025 with 30 students.
“We are addressing several critical issues through this partnership: the future of health care delivery with an interdisciplinary focus, collaborative research opportunities to improve eye and vision care, and the regional workforce shortage,” says David A. Heath, O.D., president of SUNY College of Optometry.
