April 4, 2024 — Powers & Company has established a philanthropic program, Lion’s Share, and named two nonprofit organizations as its initial beneficiaries, Sight for Life and Eye Corps.
Sight for Life shares that its mission is to create lasting surgical and clinical solutions in the communities of St. Vincent and Grenadines through education, collaboration, and improved access to technology, training, equipment, and supplies.
Eye Corps is committed to building a sustainable eyecare delivery system in Tanzania to increase access to cataract surgeries, glasses, and vision care by providing education and supplies to practitioners and ophthalmic training institutions. The organization currently maintains four treatment sites in hospitals in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro, Lindi, and Ruvuma regions.
Through Lion’s Share, Powers & Company will donate 5% of proceeds and provide volunteers to support the nonprofits’ commitment to improve eye health in underserved communities and foster equitable access to health care.
“Sight for Life is thankful to receive support through the Lion’s Share initiative, as their commitment to our organization and donation has allowed us to bring crucial sight-preserving care to areas that lack modern medical services,” says ophthalmologist Cathleen McCabe, M.D., and Sight for Life lead volunteer for more than 20 years. “Their support has been integral in helping us with our new eye hospital serving St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which will open later this year.”
“[Eye Corps is] partnered with the Ministry of Health and the MUHAS residency program where we are providing equipment, mentors, and microfinancing opportunities to build practices,” says Susan McDonald, M.D., cofounder of Eye Corps. “We are extremely grateful to pursue this goal with the help of allies…who understand that the persistence of cataract blindness cannot be justified when a cure is available.”
“We’re grateful to both of these organizations for ensuring that patients with unmet needs have improved access to clinicians and medical services,” says Carey Powers, founder and CEO of Powers & Company. “It’s an honor for us to support and volunteer with their life-changing work.”
