May 2, 2024 — To mark Healthy Vision Month in May, The Vision Council (TVC) has joined the National Eye Institute (NEI) in highlighting the connection between vision loss and mental health by amplifying a variety of resources NEI offers.
This year, the theme for Healthy Vision Month is “Reframe Your Future” to share steps people can take to live well with their vision loss. NEI offers a toolkit of resources here, and TVC shares other ways to get involved:
- Share information about vision rehabilitation—including training, tools, and technologies—that can help anyone with a visual impairment thrive. NEI offers information on vision rehabilitation services here.
- Encourage people with visual impairments to “reframe their future.” While living with vision loss can be isolating, TVC shares that it can be helpful to hear stories from others who have overcome similar obstacles. NEI offers a video series featuring award-winning chef and disability advocate Christine Ha, who lives with a visual impairment.
- Fight the loneliness epidemic by promoting the 5-for-5 Connection Challenge to encourage everyone to build and strengthen relationships. Learn more about the challenge from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services here.
