The American Optometric Association (AOA) Foundation has announced the 2025 recipients of the Dr. Larry J. Alexander Scholarship for Education, the Dr. Seymour Galina Scholarship, and the Dr. Stanley Pearle Scholarship.
The Dr. Larry J. Alexander Scholarship for Education, supported by Optovue, recognizes third-year students who demonstrate a commitment to community service and addressing health care disparities. Recipient Malia McDowell, a third-year student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry, highlighted in her application the role of optometrists in advocating for patients and ensuring access to health care resources.
The Dr. Seymour Galina Scholarship was established through a bequest from longtime AOA member Dr. Galina. It supports third-year students who have developed financial planning or work experience skills that will be valuable in their careers. Recipient Joel Cardenas, a third-year student at Rocky Mountain University College of Optometry, emphasized in his application the importance of financial management in running an optometric practice.
The Dr. Stanley Pearle Scholarship, supported by Pearle Vision, is awarded to one third-year and one fourth-year student. The application process includes developing a social media plan based on Pearle Vision’s motto, “Nobody cares for eyes more than Pearle.” Third-year recipient Elizabeth Pham from the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry focused on patient education in her plan, "Optometry: More Than Meets the Eye." Fourth-year recipient Faye Nie from Southern California College of Optometry at Marshall B. Ketchum University developed the #PearleVisionFocusedIn campaign, which promotes personalized, patient-centered eye care.
The application period for the 2026 scholarships will open in September 2025, with details available here. The Endowment and Scholarship Fund, a part of Optometry Cares—The AOA Foundation, supports scholarships and other initiatives for optometry students.
