Cindy Tromans, BSc(Hons), PhD, of the United Kingdom was formally installed as president of the World Council of Optometry (WCO) during the organization’s 2025 Virtual General Assembly on Sept. 30.
Dr. Tromans, elected to the president-elect role in July 2023, emphasized the need for the optometry profession to be recognized for its role in delivering sustainable and affordable eye care. “WCO is the global voice of optometry,” says Dr. Tromans. “And we don't just say that—we need to act it.”
The General Assembly also confirmed the election of Rajeev Prasad, MOptom, BHMS, of India as president-elect for the 2025–2027 term. Dr. Prasad pledged to support global collaboration and advance eye health initiatives. He has served on the WCO board of directors since 2021 and holds leadership roles in multiple regional optometry organizations.
Professor Peter Hendicott of Australia, WCO president from 2021 to 2023, formally exited the WCO presidents group and board. Dr. Sandra Block of the U.S., who served as WCO president from 2023 to 2025, will remain on the board as immediate past president.
