Retail sales posted a modest monthly increase and strong year-over-year gains in January, according to the CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor, powered by Affinity Solutions and released by the National Retail Federation (NRF). Total retail sales, excluding auto dealers and gas stations, rose 0.2% on a seasonally adjusted basis from December and increased 5.72% year over year on an unadjusted basis. In December, sales had risen 1.26% month over month and 3.54% year over year.

Core retail sales, which exclude restaurants in addition to auto dealers and gas stations, increased 0.15% month over month in January and were up 5.51% year over year. That compares with gains of 1.6% month over month and 3.58% year over year in December.

“Consumers demonstrated continued resilience in January, showing moderate spending growth on the heels of record-high spending during the holiday season,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “This was the fourth consecutive month that sales rose from the month before, and year-over-year gains were particularly strong.”

January’s results follow a record-breaking holiday season, as sales for the 2-month period rose 4.1% year over year, according to Retail Monitor data released previously.

January sales were up in all but 1 of 9 categories on a yearly basis, led by clothing stores, digital products, and health and personal care stores, and were up in 4 categories on a monthly basis. Here are specifics from key sectors—seasonally adjusted from last month and unadjusted compared to last year:

• Clothing and accessories stores were up 0.23% from last month and up 9.39% compared to last year.

• Digital products (such as electronic books and games) were up 1.22% from last month and up 6.45% compared to last year.

• Health and personal care stores were up 0.66% from last month and up 5.98% compared to last year.

• General merchandise stores were down 0.05% from last month but up 5.46% compared to last year.

• Grocery and beverage stores were up 0.37% from last month and up 5.41% compared to last year.

• Sporting goods, hobby, music and book stores were down 0.37% from last month but up 4.94% compared to last year.

• Electronics and appliance stores were down 0.18% from last month but up 2.54% compared to last year.

• Furniture and home furnishings stores were down 0.31% from last month but up 2.39% compared to last year.

• Building and garden supply stores were down 0.15% from last month and down 6.26% compared to last year.
